Assessment
Grades will be calculated as follows:
25% – In-class work & class participation
25% – Assignments
25% – Soundslides team project
25% – “Hong Kong Stories” website reporting
(After all of your points are added up, they are adjusted on a curve, as required by university grading policy.)
Explanation:
Each of the above categories is explained below, along with a grading scale.
- IN-CLASS WORK & CLASS PARTICIPATION: There are three components:
1) You will be required to complete assigned tasks in class. These tasks cannot be completed or made up outside of class.
2) You are expected to offer your ideas in class and demonstrate that you have done and understood the readings and assignments.
3) Students will also receive credit for participating in online discussion with classmates in the comments section of the course blog, on classmates’ individual blogs, etc..
Grading scale: 12 points (one per class session based on whether student did the in-class work) + 13 points for overall participation throughout the semester = 25 total points
- WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: You will be asked to complete regular short assignments to reinforce skills you are learning in class. Details and deadlines will be specified in the class schedule.
Grading scale: 0 – not done; 1 – incomplete/didn’t follow instructions/late; 2 – ok but showed minimal effort or lack of understanding; 3 – good; 4 – very good; 5 – excellent (total student points/total possible points x 25 = grade for this part)
- SOUNDSLIDES TEAM PROJECT:You will work as teams to gather photos and audio, then put them together as part of an audio-visual slideshow on a topic related to this semester’s theme: Hong Kong’s heritage.
Grading scale: Students will receive a score between 0-25 determined by the following factors: level of effort, teamwork, journalistic merit, quality of work, and application of skills, principles, and ideas taught in class. (For more details about criteria and grading for this project click here.)
- HONG KONG STORIES WEBSITE REPORTING: This semester students will produce online stories about different aspects of Hong Kong’s heritage. Final work will be published on the Hong Kong Stories website.
