Here I will explain how to upload photos into your Hong Kong Stories project. A separate section will explain how to format and arrange them.
We are using a plug-in called the “Joomla Content Editor” (JCE for short) so that you can upload your pictures from the front-end. Here is how you use it:
- Log in to one of your existing content items, or create a new one if you don’t have any yet.
- Click on the little photo icon, next to the link icon.

- In our system, in the section labeled “Browse” you will see a list of Folders on the left-hand side, with the folder for your class (07Fall, 08Spring, etc) at the top. (Ignore all other folders and never use them. Do not try to create other new folders.):

- Click on the correct folder for your class. A sub-folder has been created inside that folder with your name on it. Your photos should be uploaded INTO THE FOLDER WITH YOUR NAME ON IT- NOT ANYWHERE ELSE!
- Click on the folder with your name on it. Once you do those two things, the Directory should show something like /08spring/[foldername], and the middle column should be empty, like this:

- Now you are ready to upload your pictures. MAKE SURE THEY HAVE BEEN PROPERLY RE-SIZED AND CROPPED BEFORE YOU UPLOAD ANYTHING!!! You MUST NOT upload raw pictures directly from your camera before they have been re-sized!!!
- Click on the blue globe with the green arrow to upload your pictures one by one, the same way you upload pictures to Flickr or your blog. Don’t worry about where they will go in your story right now. Also, you can upload all your photos for all of your sub-stories in one batch if you want – as long as you put them in your own folder so that you can find them later!
- Once you have located your picture on your hard drive and selected it, click on the button next to “create unique file.” Then click “upload.”

- Repeat that process for how many pictures you want to upload. Now I’ve uploaded several:

- Now my photos are uploaded. I am going to ignore the stuff that says “Refresh” and “Insert”, and also ignore all the stuff at the top in the box labeled “Article Image” for now. Hit “Cancel.” (Don’t worry you won’t lose your photos as long as you see them in that middle column.
- Now you will be back to your article page. You need to save it again before you can manipulate your photos in different ways.
The next page will explain to you how to insert your photos in different ways, now that they have been uploaded into the system.
